AIR VOLUME BOOSTER

AVB-2000 — Air Volume Booster for Large Actuators

Introduction

The AVB-2000 is our mid-range air volume booster — designed to accelerate the pneumatic stroke of large actuators when a positioner alone cannot deliver enough air flow. Volume boosters are essential on emergency shutdown (ESD) valves with one- to two-second stroke requirements, compressor anti-surge valves, and any large-bore valve where stroke time is measured in seconds. The AVB-2000 delivers high-flow output, accurate input tracking, and a built-in bypass needle valve for fine-tuning system stability.

AVB - 2000

AVB - 2100

Features

  • High flow capacity — accelerates stroke of large actuators that positioners alone cannot drive

  • Input pressure tracking with 1:1 output ratio
  • Built-in bypass needle valve for stability tuning
  • Aluminum die-cast body, stainless steel internals
  • Rugged construction for outdoor and industrial service
  • Wide supply pressure range up to 10 bar (150 psi)
  • Easily mounted between positioner output and actuator inlet
  • Wide operating temperature range

Options

  • NPT 1/2 threaded exhaust ports

  • Supply pressure gauge port

  • High temperature: -20°C – +120°C

  • Low temperature: -40°C – +80°C

Specifications

When to specify a volume booster

Specify a volume booster when actuator displacement volume divided by positioner output Cv exceeds the required stroke time. Typical triggers:

  • Pneumatic actuator volume greater than approximately 500 cubic inches (8 liters)
  • Required stroke time of 2 seconds or less for ESD service
  • Required stroke time of 5 seconds or less for anti-surge service
  • Large scotch-yoke pneumatic actuators on pipeline ball valves 8″ and larger
  • Large piston actuators on butterfly valves above 24″
  • Any application where the positioner-only stroke time exceeds the process requirement

Typical applications

  • Emergency shutdown (ESD) valves with 1–2 second stroke time requirements
  • Compressor anti-surge valves on recycle lines
  • Large scotch-yoke pneumatic actuators on pipeline ball valves 8″+
  • Large globe and butterfly control valves with piston or cylinder actuators
  • Blowdown valves on pressurized vessels
  • Combustion-air and flue-gas damper valves on boilers and furnaces
  • Any modulating control valve where positioner-alone stroke time is unacceptable

Variants & options

  • Body material: aluminum die-cast (standard); other materials on request
  • Port size: ½” NPT (standard); other sizes available — contact Archer
  • Bypass orifice: factory-set; field-adjustable

Other models in this family

  • AVB-1000 — smaller actuators, lower flow
  • AVB-3000 — largest actuators, highest flow capacity
